If you're anything like me then sometimes I think they are not necessary. The main thing to consider is how far out from your date are you booking? If you are booking more than about 9 months out from your chosen date then the below points are very relevant. If however your date is around 9 months away then I probably wouldn't bother. What I would do however is get those invitations done and posted!
If you decide to go straight to the invitation then we have a sample one in your Pocket Full of Joy.
Why Save the Date Reminders Matter
Planning a wedding comes with a lot of decisions — but one of the simplest (and smartest) moves you can make early on is sending a Save the Date.
Here at Lightning Hill Estate, we’ve seen first hand how a beautifully timed reminder sets the tone for a seamless celebration. Whether you’re hosting an intimate garden ceremony or a lively celebration with family flying in from all over, Save the Dates are the secret weapon for stress-free planning.
Give Guests a Heads-Up
Between work, family, and travel, people’s calendars fill up fast. Sending a Save the Date 6–12 months out gives your guests plenty of time to:
Book accommodation
Arrange travel
Lock in leave
Avoid double-booking
For destination weddings or popular holiday dates, it’s a total game-changer.
Set the Tone for Your Day
This is the first peek into your wedding style — romantic, elegant, playful, modern, you name it. A thoughtfully designed Save the Date gets your guests excited, curious, and already imagining your big day.
And if you’re celebrating at a place like Lightning Hill Estate (with all its dreamy countryside charm), it’s the perfect chance to share that little spark of magic ahead of time.
Keep It Simple, Stylish, and Personal
Whether you go digital or send something physical, your Save the Date doesn’t have to include all the details — just the essentials:
Names
Date & time
Location
A note that the formal invite is on its way
Add a touch of personality (like a favourite photo, your wedding colour palette, or a meaningful quote), and you’ve got something memorable and meaningful.
Bottom line? A Save the Date is more than just good manners — it’s a thoughtful way to invite your people into your celebration, right from the start.
